Civil Liability Insurance Scheme and Legal Expenses Protection

The Foundation for Community Dance provides Civil Liability Insurance and Legal Expense protection via the Professional Individual Membership Scheme. These insurances have been arranged by specialist brokers Perkins Slade Ltd. A brief summary of the cover is available to download on the right of this page.

What is Civil Liability protection?
It is the generic term for an insurance policy that includes cover for the following: Professional Indemnity, Public & Products Liability, Libel and Slander insurances. The limit of indemnity is £10 million. Professional membership also provides legal expenses protection, including the defence of criminal prosecution, civil defence and arrest assistance in respect of allegation of abuse.

How much does this cost?
These insurances are included as a benefit of Professional Individual Membership of the Foundation for Community Dance. Membership runs from 1 April to 31 March each year, with prices as follows:

Joining between 1 April - 31 July costs £65
Joining between 1 August - 30 November costs £43
Joining between 1 December - 31 March costs £22
(all fee categories are subject to a one off joining fee of £10)

Joining at any point in the year provides you with membership and insurance until 31 March.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this extra to the Gordon & Co. existing policy?
A: No, it’s a new scheme to replace it.

Q: Why is it so cheap?
A: We found a new insurance broker and negotiated a better deal for individual members of the Foundation for Community Dance.

Q: Will this cover me for the musical theatre class I run at the weekends?
A: No it won’t, it is just for your Dance work.

Q: I earn £36k a year, teaching dance I earn about £10k and I have another job as a secretary which earns me £26k, which category do I go in?
A: When we say turnover it means what you earn from dance work alone - not including any other jobs you have in other sectors so this person would be in option A - turnover under £25k.

Q: I’m a freelancer and I bring in approx £28k a year but I pay myself only £15k, which category do I fit into?
A: This person would fit into the option B as their turnover is between £25k-£35k, regardless of wage payments they may take from it.

Q: Can I join on the scheme later in the year as I don’t need insurance yet?
A: Yes you can, you would pay a pro-rata amount for the remaining year to end of March and then renew for the full year in April should you wish to do so.

Q: Does it cover me for my yoga class I teach to older adults?
A: No, the exclusions are yoga, martial arts, aerobics, and Pilates but if you aren’t sure please call Gary Schofield at Perkins Slade on 0121 698 8142 to clarify.

Q: I have a couple of teachers working for me, does this insurance cover them too?
A: No it doesn’t, you would need to refer direct to Perkins Slade on 0121 698 8142 and speak to Gary Schofield.

Q: What if I don’t want the insurance but still want to stay a member?
A: You can stay on the scheme until it is due for renewal and then you would move to the Associate Membership Scheme.

Q: I would like to get some more details about the policy.
A: Contact Gary Schofield at Perkins Slade on 0121 698 8142 and he will answer any questions you have. If you have any queries not covered above, or need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact FCD on 0116 253 4553 or visit www.communitydance.org.uk/join
